- Old Comb and Toxic Chemical Interactions In Our Colonies - is a detailed look at the importance of rotating out old comb and how chemicals affect our bees. Through research and beekeeper's experiences, we take a look at how toxic synergistic chemical interactions can cause major issues in our colonies.
- The Chemistry Behind Processing Honey - explains why honey is such an unusual and special product and how it's extraordinary properties can be ruined or enhanced during processing.
Dr. Jamie Ellis
- Small Hive Beetles - Small hive beetles are a pest of honey bee colonies and they have a rapidly growing distribution globally. Many beekeepers consider them major pests while others only consider them a minor nuisance. Dr. Ellis reviews the biology, behavior, and control of small hive beetles to put the threat they pose to modern apiculture in a proper context.
- Recognizing Queen Events - Beekeepers regularly report that queen quality and management are responsible for a significant portion of their colony losses. Dr. Ellis will convey the most important queen-related stressors and discuss how to address these issues by effective stock selection and requeening.
- Toward Sustainable Beekeeping - Beekeeping is harder than ever. Colony loss rates are high. The number of pests, pathogens, and other stressors honey bees face seems to increase daily. Even still, beekeepers are positioned to address these issues imminently, both to the benefit of honey bee survival and productivity and to improved industry sustainability. To do this, we must identify the primary stressors of honey bee colonies and develop strategies to combat these stressors directly. Dr. Ellis will discuss his vision for addressing the sustainability of beekeeping and what it will take to support the vital role honey bees play in production agriculture.
